Welcome to the Botany Bay Family History Society’s new web project where you will find the names of many people from Australia and around the world with a link to the Sutherland Shire.
The Sutherland Shire is an area of historic importance - for many centuries home to the people of the Dharawal language group and where Captain James Cook first made landfall on Australian soil. Sparsely settled, there was no Sutherland Shire until 1906 when municipal control passed into the hands of newly formed Sutherland Shire Council. For many years it remained a semi-rural outpost of Sydney and a holiday destination. The construction of the rail line from Sutherland to Cronulla in 1939 and the post-war development after 1945 led to the dynamic entity that is 'the Shire' today with an area of 370 sq. kilometres (140 square miles) and population approaching 250,000.
This website enables members of the Botany Bay Family History Society to submit and display their family trees in a communal "forest" as well as articles of historical interest. The Botany Bay Connections Genealogy Database contains many names that have a family connection with the Sutherland Shire and surrounding areas. By searching this database you may discover your ancestors and the connections between families. Presently in the database there are more than 16,500 names consisting of over 6,000 families and you will also be able to find the names of prominent, famous, and not so famous people who have had an influence on the development of the Shire or those who lived in the Shire and became well known for their war service or their endeavours in commerce, industry or the arts.
Links to schools, churches & cemeteries are on the site as well as details of all the local golf courses & war memorials and many other places of interest in the Shire.
At this time many of the pages are still under development with information collated and/or provided by members of the society.
Feel free to browse the site and see what you can find.
