Augustus Rutherford Shaw (11 Apr 1860-3 Dec 1936) was born in Newcastle, NSW, the sixth of the eight children of Francis James Shaw and Jane nee Hobart.
Augustus Rutherford Shaw worked for eight years with the Australian Joint Stock Bank before deciding to enter the ministry of the Church of England. Resigning from the bank in 1885, he went to Goulburn, NSW, to study under Canon (later Bishop) D’Arcy Irvine. Shortly after his ordination in 1889, he married Mary Emilia (Polly) Druitt (1859-1927), the daughter of Archdeacon Thomas Druitt, of Monaro. The marriage took place at Petersham on 16 June, 1890.
Shaw served as curate and rector in the Goulburn diocese for 23 years at Cooma, Murrumburrah, Holbrook, Marulan, Gundagai and Gunning. In 1911, he was appointed by the Archbishop of Sydney to the Belmore and Moorefields parish and remained there until 1918. He was then appointed rector of St.Augustine’s , Bulli. In 1923, he was appointed to St.John’s Church at Sutherland. After 43 years in the Church of England ministry, he retired in 1931.
Augustus Rutherford Shaw and his wife, Mary Emelia, had six children namely:
Edna Mary Anne Jane Shaw - (7 June 1891- 25 Jan 1974)
Frederick Rutherford Hobart Shaw - (5 Nov 1892 -10 Feb 1987)
Arthur Thomas Shaw - (26 Mar 1894 - 1979)
Edward Seymour Shaw – (9 August 1895 - 15 Apr 1968)
Ella Maud Vancee Shaw – (19 Feb 1897 - 1983)
Harold Augustus Shaw – (5 Sept 1898 – 19 May 1956)
Mary Emelia Shaw died in March, 1927 and, after a service at St. Michael’s Church, Surry Hills, was buried in the Church of England Cemetery, Waverly. At the service, Bishop D’Arcy Irvine paid great tribute to the work Mary Emelia had done for the church.
In November, 1927, Augustus Shaw married Cordelia Maud Moberly at Belmore, NSW. A son, Gordon Francis Moberly Shaw was born in 1929 at Ashfield. He died in 1946. Cordelia Maud Moberly Shaw died on 5 June, 1931, at Glebe, NSW.
Augustus Rutherford Shaw died on 3 December, 1936. He was buried in the Church of England Cemetery, Waverly.
