SHAW, Frederick Rutherford Hobart (1892-1987)
Frederick Rutherford Hobart Shaw (5 Nov 1891- 10 Feb 1987) was born in Holbrook, NSW, the second child and eldest son of Rev. Augustus Rutherford Shaw and his wife, Mary Emilia, nee Druitt. Like his siblings, he would have attended the local public school where his father was the local minister and possibly, like his brother Edward Seymour, was a boarder at SCEGS (Shore), North Sydney.
Fred became an engineer and, in 1915, in London, enlisted in the British Army as a Sapper in the Royal Engineers. He saw service in France and was mentioned in despatches from General Sir Douglas Haig dated 9 April, 1917. He was recommended for the award of the Military Medal ‘for bravely risking his life in assisting a wounded comrade into a trench’.
After the war, he returned to Australia and, in 1924, married Grace Upfold at Sutherland where his father was minister at St. John’s Church. They settled in Cronulla at Gosport Street and later at Burke Road.
Fred became well known and respected as a real estate agent, auctioneer and valuator and set up his business in Kingsway, Miranda, where he operated for many years. He worked in conjunction with his brother, Edward Seymour who set up a similar business in Curranulla Street, Cronulla. Fred also served a term (1933-34) as a Sutherland Shire Councillor. During World War II, Fred enlisted, in 1939, at Cronulla in the Army Citizen Military Forces.
Grace Shaw died in 1980. Her ashes were interred in the Rose Garden of Woronora Cemetery. Fred was in the Mosman Nursing Home when he died on 10 February, 1987. His ashes were interred near those of Grace. Probate on his estate was granted in New South Wales on 4 May, 1987.
