MARKUS ZUSAK,

Markus Frank Zusak ( born 23 June 1975) is an Australian writer. He is best known for The Book Thief and The Messenger which have been international best sellers.

Zusak was born in Sydney to Helmut and Lisa Zusak who migrated to Australia in the late 1950s. Helmut came from Germany and Lisa from Austria. Neither could read or write English when they first arrived but strongly encouraged their children to read and communcate in English from an early age. Markus is the youngest of four children and was educated at Engadine High School and the University of New South Wales and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and Diploma of Education. He briefly taught English at Engadine High School.

Zusak is the author of several books which have been published internationally. He has won several awards both in Australia and overseas.

In 1999, his first novel The Underdog was published. The first book in a trilogy it was followed by Fighting Reuben Wolfe (American Library Association Best Book for Young Adults) and When Dogs Cry (Queensland Premier’s Literary Award for Young Adult Fiction).

The Messenger was published in 2002 and won CBC Book of the Year Award (Older Readers) and the New South Wales Premier’s Literary Award (Ethel Turner Prize).

The Book Thief was published in 2005 and has been translated into more than 30 languages and was adapted as a film in 2013. It has topped the best seller lists at Amazon.com and on the New York Times.

Markus Zusak is married to Mika Zusak and has two children.
