At one time theproperty, owned by the first Mr. James Mayberry, stretchedfrom Meroo Creek to the far side of the Nerriga Road, butafter the demise of Mr. Mayberry the property was dividedbetween the boys of the family, and the second Mr JamesMayberry, who passed away some years ago, became the squireof  "Maybrook.'"The first James Mayberry was a Welshman, who, leaving theland of his birth, came per sailing ship to Australia, thejourney taking six months. He was attracted to theBraidwood district by the lure of the precious metal, gold.Stories were told abroad that fortunes were lying on theground in nuggets, with fabulously rich reefs, where theyellow metal could be won in large quantities. EventuallyJames Mayberry I bought the property, which he named ''Maybrook," from the Dixon Estate. The late owner, Mr. Dixon,had been Gold Commissioner at Braidwood.Originally 'Maybrook ' homestead was built for an hotel. Itwas solidly constructed of stone with 18-inch thick wallsand also had a large cellar. About 14 years ago the lateMr. James Mayberry II remodelled portion of the spacioushome, turning it into a very fine modern residence with allconveniences.Some years ago very successful dances were held at"Maybrook" for the local hospital, James Mayberry and TerryMcGrath being the organisers, the function being lookedupon as one of the events of the year, and a grand nightalways resulted. The old-timers particularly looked forwardto this annual event. Well into the early hours of next daythe hills around echoed with the notes of violin andconcertina playing the tuneful old-time melodies. Aconsiderable amount of money was collected for the hospitalin this way, and the institution recognised the services ofthe two organisers by making them life members. The bigcrowd at the clearing sale on Saturday was reminiscent ofthose days. A lantern which, by the way, was sold at thesale, was one bought by Mr. Mayberry for thosedances.  There is always a feeling of sadness and regret when aproperty which has remained in the one family for so long,passes into other hands. Still, with the breakdown inhealth suffered by Mrs. Mayberry, it became impossible forher and her daughter, Miss Edna, to carry on. When MissMayberry, accompanied by her brother- in-law, Mr. Adams,leaves to-day the last link with "Maybrook" will besevered. The new owners, Mr. and Mrs. V. J. Hickey, andtheir family, will move into the stately old home.Mrs. Mayberry was not well enough to come back for thesale, she having left four weeks ago to stay with herdaughter, Mrs. Adams, at Bexley. The new home bought, byMrs. Mayberry and Miss Edna at Kingsgrove will be completedin the next few weeks. The 'Dispatch' hopes they will bevery happy there.
