The Daily Telegraph Sydney Friday 9 January 1914 Page 10 Inquest report on deaths of Margaret, Daphne and Alexander Louden SURF VICTIMS --THE ' CR0NULLA FATALITIES. brave attempts at rescue. Mr. Hawkins, City Coroner, held an Inquiryat the Coroner's Court yesterday, concerning the deaths of Margaret Louden, Daphne Louden. and Alexandor James Louden, who were drowned near Cronulla on December 30. Herbert John Louden, boot manufacturer, residing at Penshurst, stated that Margaret Louden and Daphne Louden were his sisters. The former was 21 years of age, and the latter a school girl. Alexander was his son, and was 12 years of age. Neither of the. girls could swim, and the boy was .not a good swimmer. Witness's wife was not well enough to attend the court; it would endanger her life if she were compelledto give evidence. He heard her make a statement' to the police. She-said:"We went to the . beach about a quarter to seven in the morning, and were to go into the Bogey Hole; but Margaret said the tide was too low, and it was too calm, and we went a few yards further to Blackwood's Beach. Margaret took off her coat, and went in, and was in. some minutes when she said to me.?Come in, Celia. It is lovely.?. I next heard a cry, and on looking round I saw Aleck in his pyjamas just plunging into the water. He went to the assistance of 'Margaret, who was calling for help. My first thought was that he was going in for a swim, notwithstanding that he had no costume. I .then realised they were in difficulties. Daphuo was on the. edge of the beach with the children, and ,she at, the same time appeared to realise they were in danger and plunged in to the assistance of.the other two They were carried out instantly, and disappeared. I was restrained from following by the children clinging to me. When Margaret went in. the sea was.comparatively calm,. but it came up in an instant. I screamed for help and sent two of the children for help." Dr. Sproule said ?that attempts at resuscitation were made, but failed.? Thomas Eben Rowbotham, beach, inspector and life-saver, at Cronulla Beach, stated that ?he and others recovered the bodies.? Constable Tugwell stated that Blackwood's Beach was a dangerous spot, and not an ordinary bathing place. It "was. about 600 yards from the regular resort. Large numbers bathed there, and he was, constantly warning them against it. A danger board was to be erectedthere. There was a life-saving crew'at Cronulla.? The City Coroner, found .that. ?Margaret Louden was accidentally drowned while bathing; that Alexander James Louden was accidentally drowned 'while attempting to rescue MargaretLouden; and that Daphne Louden was' accidentally drowned while attempting to rescue the other two.? Mr. Louden informed the Coroner that, he was satisfied the life-saving crew could not have effected a rescue, had -they, been on the spot. Nothing could have been done without a boat. | ||
