Sutherland
Congregational Church Roll of Honour
Sutherland Shire’s first World War 1 roll of honour was
in the Congregational Church, then in Railway Parade. Colonel Chaplain the
Reverend R. H. Austin unveiled the memorial on 11 April 1916. The honour roll
was in the form of a marble tablet naming ten church members who had volunteered
for active service. Later, another section was added for further members who had
enlisted.
The Uniting Church was established in 1977. Most of the
members of the Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregational churches came together
in this union. The Uniting Church in Sutherland used the premises of the former
Methodist Church on the corner of Flora and Merton Streets. The marble tablets
were relocated to this site but their present whereabouts is unknown.
The names of the servicemen inscribed on the marble
tablets were recorded by David and Dorothy Johnson in their book
A History of Sutherland Uniting Church, and were as listed below.
