War Memorials
Throughout the Sutherland Shire a number of war memorials and honour boards can
be found which name men from the Shire, or with a connection to the Shire, who
served during 1914-1918 in far flung battlefields of Gallipoli, France and
Flanders. Many of those named did not return and are remembered also on
memorials such as Menin Gate in Ypres, Belgium or the Australian National
Memorial at Villeurs-Bretonneux in France.
In preparation for the centenary of The
Great War Marilyn Handley and Susanne Hewitt, of Botany Bay Family History
Society, researched these Sutherland Shire Memorials. They were able to locate
thirteen of the memorials and obtain the names from the Sutherland
Congregational Church Roll of Honour, the whereabouts of which is now unknown.
Marilyn and Susanne published their book,
SERVICE AND SACRIFICE Sutherland Shire Memorials 1914-1918, in 2015. The
book gives a detailed history of each of the memorials, also a biography of
almost every one of those listed on our Shire memorials. The book is available
from Botany Bay Family History Society, 02 9523 8948. P.O. Box 1006, Sutherland,
NSW 1499.
